Wildwood Farm Residents

Jeannette Ford

  • 1987 Bachelor of Arts Mount Holyoke College
  • Trainer, young horse starter, farm designer, and visionary
  • 1987 Graduate HA Pony Clubber
  • Selected participant in Hilltop Farm Young Dressage Horse Trainers Symposia
  • ARIA Dressage and Combined Training Level II certified instructor since 2002

Has ridden regularly with Denny Emerson and Jim Koford, and in multiple clinics on multiple horses with Jim Wofford, Artur Kottas, Lucinda Green, Mike Page, and David O'Connor.

Georg Theodorescu, Buddy Brown, Linda Allen, Ian Stark, and Bobby Costello have also had a go at shaping her.  Much credit to them and several lesser known local trainers for the extensive guidance they have provided. Jeannette insists that all flaws which persist in her riding remain despite their combined efforts.

Growing up in Pony Club(with Sally O'Connor as her first DC), she received excellent instruction in riding, stable management, teaching, and safety best practices on her way to graduating as an H-A.

Jeannette has been involved with horses the majority of her life, though college and several years as a kayak instructor/ropes course facilitator/raft guide broadened her horizons. While she is currently focusing on dressage and eventing along with starting young horses, she has a varied background including: having been awarded colors by two foxhunts, competed internationally in Pony Club Games, started a vaulting team in college, completed numerous 20 and 35 mile pleasure and competitive trail rides, and riding two working hunters in the Dublin Horse Show.

Early influences included Sally O'Connor, Col Edmonds, Wendy Carlson, and Jonas Irbinskas.

While developing her Wildwood Farm to become a young horse training center, Jeannette travels to farms in the Triangle to teach and train. She starts youngsters on site at several breeding farms and for individuals seeking help starting their babies. She also teaches and offers training rides on her farm and locally.

She hopes someday to produce a Grand Unified Theory of Riding which reconciles apparent contradictions in teaching directives. In the meantime, she finds exposure to a variety of reputable approaches gives her a bigger "bag of tricks" in helping horses and riders improve.

Graduated from Mt Holyoke College with a BA in politics - the theory end of the department. Jeannette used to joke that she tried to give liberal arts educations to her horses and riders, but then she realized that it is in fact a serious part of her mission. By teaching foxhunters to leg yield and dressage queens to gallop through the woods, she hopes to be producing well rounded lifelong horsepeople and horses - individuals who can use their (equestrian) education to meet changing situations throughout their lives - and have fun at it!

Farm Manager Karen can often be found making trails, building sheds, and generally bringing form to the vision.

Jane Day

She who makes it all possible.  When Jeannette first started teaching Jane on Jane's young mare, Jeannette thought, "When I build the farm, I need Jane on it".  Jane feeds the herd 6 nights a week and keeps the paddocks and stalls clean and ponies tucked in for the night. This allows Jeannette to stay sane. Mare Debbie provides quiet leadership for the herd as well.
